Job Summary

Administers the preparation or planning of federal, state and local tax returns in accordance with tax laws and regulations and initiates the making of payments, elections, and files returns on a timely basis as required by the tax laws. Tax areas include insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations. Recommends corporate position based on research of current and pending tax laws; reviews accounting procedures for compliance with all laws; manages issues to assist in the settlement of federal, state and local audits; reviews FAS 109 Balance Sheets. Supports the research of new tax strategies. Works with directors in providing business partner information on operational concerns.RelationshipsReports to Tax Director/Officer/Executive.No direct reports to this position.Core Duties and Responsibilities1. Represents tax department on system teams. Reviews changes in existing system for continued compliance with tax department needs. Verifies accuracy and completeness of tax calendar.2. Reviews and/or plans federal and state/local income tax returns. Performs on-site review with business partners if required. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations.3. Reviews all research and analysis in preparation for compliance audits. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations.4. Assists in analyzing and reporting to management the potential impact of pending legislation as it relates to assigned companies' taxation and general corporate tax laws and regulations. Evaluates the cost to the enterprise of all enacted legislation. Implements the necessary reporting procedures to comply with all enacted legislation. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations.5. Reviews tax returns including consolidated tax returns. Reviews record retention policies to provide continued support for tax returns for all open years.6. Conducts quarterly meetings with business partners. Communicates tax issues as well as listens for changes in the business environments. Develops contacts at the appropriate level to aid in providing timely tax response and planning opportunities.7. Manages the development, on a quarterly basis, of the federal and state tax provision for the enterprise companies. This includes both statutory and GAAP financial reporting. Develops cash forecasts. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations.8. Manages all preparation of state and federal tax provisions for the use in establishing budgets and financial statements. Working with Planning and Investments to develop federal income tax provisions for five-year projection. Keep the Investment Department advised as at all times of our current tax situation so as to enable them to make investments that return the best after-tax yield. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation, international and tax-exempt organizations.9. Reviews all research and analysis on tax strategies. Develops models used to assist analysis. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax-exempt organizations.10. Performs other related duties as assigned.EducationUndergraduate degree with studies in tax, law or accounting.DesignationsProgress toward CPA certification or law degree.Experience Minimum of six years in insurance tax field for a life or multi-line insurance company, public accounting firm or law firm.Knowledge Knowledge of federal and state/local tax law. Knowledge of statutory and/or GAAP accounting. Knowledge of modeling and tax systems. Knowledge of research techniques.Skills / CompetenciesAbility to communicate with management, insurance regulators, IRS agents and consultants. Ability to analyze operating results to project tax consequences and to anticipate regulatory questions.FLSANot Eligible (Exempt)Working ConditionsNormal office environment.
